The FortiFlora Probiotic Supplement is one of 2 probiotics which had been tested and passed the Canadian Veterinary Journals sniff test as listed on PubMed. The other probiotic was the IAMS Prostar Max Probiotic which is also reviewed on this website.
Unlike the 2 other probiotics on this website:
IAMS® Prostra™ Max Probiotic (Bifidobacterium animals)
GNC Pets Ultra Mega Probiotic (Bacillus coagulans)
The FortiFlora Probiotic supplement makes use of Enterococcus faecium. The benefits are amongst others inhibitory effects against Shigella, E. coli, and salmonella. It has also been shown to stop and prevent infectious diarrhoea and antibiotic-induced diarrhoea. This we know from a human trial as reported by Sage Journals which can be seen here:
“A multicentre double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, involving 123 patients at 10 centres, was carried out to assess the efficacy of preparation of lactic acid-producing Enterococcus SF 68 in the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and in the treatment of acute diarrhoea. Enterococcus SF 68 was shown to be effective in reducing the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea in comparison with placebo (8.7% compared with 27.2%, respectively).”
It has also been shown to boosts immune response in younger dogs (less than one-year-old) as well as older dogs (older than 9 years). There is an overall microfloral balance improvement in all dogs as well as an increase in the growth of other good bacteria. This being mainly lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. The brand FortiFlora Probiotic was also one of only 2 products to be shown to live up to what is advertised. This is again from PubMed “Assessment of commercial probiotic bacterial contents and labels accuracy”.
“The objective of this study was to evaluate the labels and bacterial contents of commercial probiotics marketed for use in animals. Only 2 of these also had an acceptable label, which properly described the contents. Deficiencies in veterinary probiotic quality remain.”
If you are in the market for probiotics for your animals then consider Fortiflora or as alternative Prosta probiotics or GNC Mega Probiotics which are also listed on this website. Don’t forget to ensure that your dog is dewormed each year and also consider a good multivitamin for older dogs.
